Communicating with non-mahram cousins on whatsapp

Q: A family member created a whatsapp group for my Mother, her three sibling and all their children, so that we can keep in touch. The only problem is that there is interaction between the male and female cousins. Is this acceptable and what should my response to them be if it is not?

A: How can this shameful behaviour be right.
