Four rakaats sunnah with one salaam
Q: Can you give the proof and hadith in which the prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) prayed four rakaats sunnah at once. Someone is saying that the prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) prayed them 2 then 2 so can you give the hadith and its strength?
A: There are two types of hadeeth that are reported in this regard. One wherein there are four rakaats with just one salaam and there are other ahaadeeth that speak about making salaam at the end of every two rakaats. Many of our ulama prefer performing four rakaats with one salaam and there many other ulama who prefer making salaam after every two rakaats. Where it has been clearly stated that Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) performed the four rakaats with one salaam then that should be performed accordingly, like the four sunnats before Zuhr.
عن ابن عمر : عن النبي صلى الله عليه و سلم قال صلاة الليل والنهار مثنى مثنى (جامع الترمذي رقم 597)
عن عاصم بن ضمرة قال : سألنا عليا عن صلاة رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم من النهار ؟ فقال إنكم لا تطيقون ذاك فقلنا من أطاق ذاك منا فقال كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم إذا كانت الشمس من ههنا كهيئتها من ههنا عند العصر صلى ركعتين وإذا كانت الشمس من ههنا كهيئتها من ههنا عند الظهر صلى أربعا وصلى أربعا قبل الظهر وبعدها ركعتين وقبل العصر أربعا يفصل بين كل ركعتين بالتسليم على الملائكة المقربين والنبيين والمرسلين ومن تبعهم من المؤمنين والمسلمين (جامع الترمذي رقم 598)
