Q: Is it permissible to invest in the 5 Rand Mandela coins (proof and mint state)?

A: If there is nothing that is contrary to the Shari`ah then it is permissible.

Q: I would appreciate it if Mufti Saheb could further enlighten me on whether it would be permissible when conducting trade in the 5 Rand Mandela Coin to trade in leiu of Rands despite different amounts or would it be necessary to instead trade in leiu of other currencies?

A: If the Mandela coin is exclusively a collector's item, then it will be in the law of merchandise.
