Q: How much should someone love his wife?
A: Showing mahabat entails providing for her needs and fulfilling her rights, being gentle and polite when speaking to her, not causing her any inconvenience and keeping her comfortable at all times within the limits of the Shariah. The relationship of nikaah should be such that each spouse should assist and encourage the other in gaining the proximity of Allah Ta'ala. One's mahabat for his wife should not lead him to breaking the commands of shariah.
In essence, there is no limit to the extent of mahabat between the spouses, as long as the love does not lead them to disobeying Allah Ta`ala and His Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam), or violating any rights of the creation.
And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
