Meaning of breaking family ties

Q: I love all my family members, both maternal and paternal. But I am too lazy to phone them and sometimes extremely shy for other members of my family. Therefore I do not keep contact. Will I be regarded as one of those who break family ties?
A: Not keeping contact due to being preoccupied in work does not amount to breaking family ties. Breaking family ties means that due to hatred you intentionally keep away from them. However, the sunnah in regard to maintaining family ties is that one keeps his family's deeni and worldly welfare at heart and is concerned about them. Occasionally, you may send an email or sms to them to find out about their welfare.
