Dua (Intention) for Fasting

Q: Is the dua that we are taught for fasting "Bi sawmi ghadin nawaytu" established from Hadith? If a person makes his niyyah in the morning then should he omit the word "Ghadin"?

A: This does not appear in the Hadith. However, the general meaning contained in it is supported from the Ahaadith. Niyyat is a condition for the validity of the saum (fast). If people go on a hunger strike, since the intention of fasting is not found, their remaining without food will not be considered as fasting.

He can omit the word ghadin if he makes his intention in the morning (for a nafl fast).
