Sadaqah for Dropping the Qur'an

Q: We often hear that a person who drops the Qur'an should give sadaqah. Is there any substanciation of this sort in the Ahaadith?
A: There is no atonement recorded in the Hadith for this. However if one wishes to give sadaqa so that he will be more careful in the future then he may do so.
وَأَقِمِ الصَّلَاةَ طَرَفَيِ النَّهَارِ وَزُلَفًا مِّنَ اللَّيْلِ إِنَّ الْحَسَنَاتِ يُذْهِبْنَ السَّيِّئَاتِ ذَٰلِكَ ذِكْرَىٰ لِلذَّاكِرِينَ ﴿هود: ١١٤﴾
عن أنس بن مالك قال قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم إن الصدقة لتطفئ غضب الرب وتدفع عن ميته السوء (جامع الترمذي 1/144)
عن ابي ذر قال قال لي رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم اتق الله حيثما كنت وأتبع السيئة الحسنة تمحها وخالق الناس بخلق حسن (جامع الترمذي 2/19)
