Zakaat on Gold

Q: I would like to know the correct method for paying Zakat on Gold. As far as I know we have to pay 2.5% of the total gold we own converted to the currency of the area you are living in.

I calculate Zakaat on 1st Ramadan every year, because I have cash holding as well so I do a calculation conversion of the gold zakaat into currency amount and would distribute that amount time to time, rather than selling the gold weight to be paid as Zakaat. I have two questions here:

1. What if I calculate the gold Zakaat and convert it to currency amount as per rate on first Ramadan, but do not disburse it on the same day or within the same month , whereas the gold rate keeps on fluctuating every day (like it is happening these days).

2. What if I did not calculate the Zakaat on Gold (realization of Zakaat) on first of Ramadan and calculates it some time later? What shall be the rate applied then?

A: The correct procedure is either to give one-fortieth of the gold or its value. Look at the equivalent value at the time you are discharging the zakaah.
