Viewing an animal before purchase

Q: A local supplier of sheep uses 1 of 2 methods in purchasing his sheep from a distant farmer:

1. The weight and description is given to him by the farmer telephonically.

2. He views digital images of the actual sheep as sent to him by the farmer.

Will the transaction of sale be correct in both situations considering he has not seen the actual animal?

A: Shari’ah has instructed that one view the animal before purchasing it. The reason for Shari’ah instructing that one view the animal before purchasing it is so that one will have knowledge of the animal he is purchasing and be pleased with what he is purchasing. This will save him from having any regret or complaint later on. Hence, if the weight and description of the animal is given and one views the digital pictures of the actual sheep he is purchasing, the sale will be valid.

Note: One should refrain from all types of pictures whether digital pictures or any other type of pictures, as the Hadith has prohibited one from getting involved in picture making. If a picture is sent of the animal, it should be without the head.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
