Where will Essa (Alayhis Salaam) Descend?
Q: Is there any specific conclusive narrations indicating where Essa (Alayhis Salaam) will descend? Reading some literature its mentioned Essa (Alayhis Salaam) will descend at the Jamia Masjid in Damascus. However recently listening to a bayaan by a certain Scholar, he mentioned that Essa (Alayhis Salaam) will descend at Masjid ul Aqsa.
A: Regarding the place where Hadhrat Essa (Alaihis Salaam) will descend, there are two views of the Ulama. According to Allaamah Suyuti (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) and Moulana Gangohi (Rahmatullahi Alaihi), Hadhrat Essa (Alaihis Salaam) will descend in Baitul Muqaddas (i.e. Masjidul Aqsa). This is supported by the Hadith reported in Ibn Maajah Shareef:
فقالت أم شريك بنت أبي العكر يا رسول الله فأين العرب يومئذ ؟ قال هم يومئذ قليل . وجلهم ببيت المقدس . وإمامهم رجل صالح . فبينما إمامهم قد تقدم يصلي بهم الصبح إذ نزل عليهم عيسى بن مريم الصبح (سنن ابن ماجة باب فتنة الدجال وخروج عيسى بن مريم وخروج يأجوج ومأجوج 2/298)
Umme Shareek (Radiallahu Anha) asked Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) “At the time before Qiyaamat, where will the Arabs (with strong Imaan) be?” Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wassallam) said, “The Arabs at that time will be very few and most of them will be in Baitul Muqaddas, the Imaam of the Muslims will be a pious man (i.e. Mahdi Radiallahu Anhu). Whilst the Imaam will be ready to perform the Salaah, suddenly Essa (Alaihis Salaam) will descend (i.e. in Baitul Muqaddas)”.
According to Allaamah Ibn Kathir (Rahmatullahi Alaihi), Hadhrat Essa (Alaihis Salaam) will descend in Damascus. This is supported by the Hadith reported in Muslim Shareef:
فينزل عند المنارة البيضاء شرقي دمشق (صحيح لمسلم باب ذكر الدجال وصفة وما معه 2/401)
Rasulullah (Sallallhu Alaihi Wasallam said that Essa (Alaihis Salaam) will descend on the white eastern minaret of Damascus.
From both these views, the first view seems to be more correct since it conforms to the other Ahaadith that explain that Baitul Muqaddas will be the army base and fortress of the Muslims at that time.
As far as the Hadith that explains that Hadhrat Essa (Alaihis Salaam) will descend upon the white eastern minaret of Damascus, the Ulama explain that this Hadith can literally be interpreted and translated in two different ways:
He will descend upon the white eastern minaret of the Masjid i.e. Masjid-e-Aqsa which will be towards the direction of Damascus.
He will descend upon the white eastern minaret of Damascus i.e. the Jaami` Masjid of Damascus.
From these two interpretations, the first interpretation is preferred in order to reconcile between all the Ahaadith.
يعني أن الظاهر من حديث الباب أن نزول عيسى عليه السلام يكون في شرقي دمشق وهو مشكل بما ورد من رواية النزول ببيت المقدس واختلفوا في الجمع بينهما ومختار الشيخ ترجيح رواية بيت المقدس وإليه مال السيوطي كما حكاه عنه القاري اذ قال ذكر السيوطي في تعليقه على ابن ماجة أنه قال الحافظ ابن كثير في رواية أن عيسى عليه السلام ينزل ببيت المقدس وفي رواية بالأردن وفي رواية بمعسكر المسلمين قات حديث نزوله ببيت المقدس في ابن ماجة هو عندي أرجح ولا ينافي سائر الراوايات لأن بيت المقدس شرقي دمشق وهو معسكر المسلمين إذ ذاك والأردن اسم الكورة كما في الصحاح وبيت المقدس داخل فيه وإن لم يكن في بيت المقدس الآن منارة فلا بد أن تحدث قبل نزوله انتهى ومال الاكثرون إلى ترجيح رواية شرقي دمشق وبها منارة بيضاء موجودة الآن واليه مال صاحب الإشاعة والدمني في نور مصباح الزجاجة وحكى عن ابن كثير أنه الأشهر (الكوكب الدري على جامع الترمذي 3/163-164)
