Performing Salaah with short sleeves
Q:
1. What is the status of Salaah performed with short sleeves (shirts/kurtas)?
2. What is the reason for it being makrooh?
I heard that Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam's) under arm or to the effect became visible while in salaah due to the sleeves being broad or wide. The portion above the elbow became visible as with short sleeves.

The explanation that the sleeves were broad doesn’t seem to be the preferred explanation, for the simple reason that no matter how broad a sleeve may be, but it is very unlikely to see the armpit having worn a sleeved garment. The general dress in the time of Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) was the upper garment and lower – two plain sheets (shawls). If this type of garment is in vogue then there is no harm to raise the hands in the manner that has been explained in the hadeeth, but to find a permissibility with the shawl and apply it upon the qamees (kurta) doesn’t sound fair and correct. Generally, the short sleeves is not considered to be a respectable attire and hence not worn on occasions of respect and dignity. Obviously, Allah Ta`ala is more worthy of respect.

وعن أبي بن كعب قال الصلاة في الثوب الواحد سنة كنا نفعله مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ولا يعاب علينا فقال ابن مسعود إنما كان ذاك إذ كان في الثياب قلة فأما إذ وسع الله فالصلاة في الثوبين أزكى رواه أحمد (مشكاة المصابيح، الرقم: 771)
قهستاني ( و ) كره ( كفه ) أي رفعه ولو لتراب كمشمر كم أو ذيل ( وعبثه به ) أي بثوبه ( وبجسده ) للنهي إلا لحاجة ولا بأس به خارج صلاة ( وصلاته في ثياب بذلة ) يلبسها في بيته ( ومهنة ) أي خدمة إن له غيرها وإلا لا (الدر المختار 1/640)
قال العلامة ابن عابدين -رحمه الله -: قال في البحر وفسرها في شرح الوقاية بما يلبسه في بيته ولا يذهب به إلى الأكابر والظاهر أن الكراهة تنزيهية (رد المحتار 1/640)
