Folding the pants above the ankles when performing salaah

Q: Someone told me that it is a sin to fold the pants above the ankles before performing salaah, and it is better to let the pants hang below the ankles. He mentioned that there is a hadith of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) that prohibits folding the garments in salaah. Is this correct?

A: The Hadith which the person is referring to appears in Muslim Shareef and Abu Dawood Shareef. However, the person has quoted the Hadith out of context. During the time of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam), the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu anhum) would perform their salaah upon sand in the musjid. Some of them, due to not wanting their clothing to touch the sand, began folding their clothing (sleeves, etc.). Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) commanded them not to fold their clothing or hold it back, but let it touch the ground. However, this hadith does not refer to folding the pants that hangs below the ankles being prohibited. Therefore, if a person folds his pants that hangs below his ankles, it will not be impermissible.

As far as the pants or trousers are concerned, there are authentic and explicit Ahaadith which show that the one who wears his pants below the ankles will be punished in the hereafter.  Thus, it should be borne in mind that a person should not fold his pants only at the time of salaah, rather he should wear his pants above his ankles at all times so that he does not enter under the warning mentioned in the Ahaadith for those who wear their pants below their ankles.

And Allah Ta'ala knows best.
