Nisaab of Cattle

Q: What is the Nisaab amount for Cattle?

A: The Nisaab for all cattle (bulls, buffaloes and cows) is thirty cattle. If the total amount of cattle the person possesses equals less than thirty then zakaat will not be fardh. Once the total amount reaches thirty till thirty-nine, one 1 year old animal will be fardh. When the amount reaches forty till fifty-nine, one 2 year old animal will be fardh. Once the amount reaches sixty till sixty-nine, two 1 year old animals will be fardh. When the amount reaches seventy till seventy-nine, one 1 year old and one 2 year old animal will be fardh. Thereafter for every thirty animals one 1 year old animal will be added and for every forty animals one 2 year old animal will be added. E.g:

1. If one possesses eighty cattle he will discharge two 2 year old animals in zakaat. 

2. If one possesses ninety cattle he will discharge three 1 year old animals in zakaat.

3. If one possesses one hundred cattle he will discharge two 1 year old animals and one 2 year old animal in zakaat.

4. If one possesses one hundred and ten cattle he will discharge one 1 year old animal and two 2 year old animals in zakaat.

If one possesses different types of cattle e.g. bulls, buffaloes and cows, then since the nisaab for all cattle is the same, they will be added together and zakaat will be discharged on the total amount. The animal that is more in number will be given in zakaat. If they are equal in number then if one decides to discharge his zakaat from that type of cattle which is regarded to be more valuable than the rest then it will be permissible for him to give a cheap animal of that type in zakaat. However if he decides to discharge his zakaat from that type of cattle which is regarded to be less valuable than the other types then he is obligated to give an expensive animal of that type.

E.g. He has bulls and buffaloes and buffaloes are more valuable than bulls. If one is more than the other in number then he will discharge his zakaat from that type. If both are equal in number then if he discharges his zakaat from the bulls, he is obligated to give an expensive bull in zakaat and if he discharges his zakaat from the buffaloes, he is permitted to give a cheap buffalo in zakaat since the buffaloes are more valuable than the bulls. It is also permissible for one to discharge the zakaat of the cattle through giving the value of the cattle in zakaat.

(نصاب البقر والجاموس) ولو توالدا من وحش وأهلية بخلاف عكسه ووحشي بقر وغنم وغيرهما فإنه لا يعد في النصاب (ثلاثون سائمة) غير مشتركة (وفيها تبيع) لأنه يتبع أمه (ذو سنة) كاملة (أو تبيعة) أنثاه (وفي أربعين مسن ذو سنتين أو مسنة وفيما زاد) على الأربعين (بحسابه) في ظاهر الرواية عن الإمام وعنه لا شيء فيما زاد (إلى ستين ففيها ضعف ما في ثلاثين) وهو قولهما والثلاثة وعليه الفتوى بحر عن الينابيع وتصحيح القدوري (ثم في كل ثلاثين تبيع وفي كل أربعين مسنة) إلا إذا تداخلا كمائة وعشرين فيخير بين أربع أتبعه وثلاث مسنات وهكذا (الدر المختار 2/280)

قال العلامة ابن عابدين - رحمه الله -: قوله (والجاموس) هو نوع من البقر كما في المغرب فهو مثل البقر في الزكاة والأضحية والربا ويكمل به نصاب البقر وتؤخذ الزكاة من أغلبها وعند الاستواء يؤخذ أعلى الأدنى وأدنى الأعلى نهر وعلى هذا الحكم البخت والعراب والضأن والمعز ابن ملك (رد المحتار 2/280)

في ثلاثين بقرة تبيع ذو سنة أو تبيعة وفي أربعين مسن ذو سنتين أو مسنة وفيما زاد بحسابه إلى ستين ففيها تبيعان وفي سبعين مسنة وتبيع وفي ثمانين مسنتان فالفرض يتغير في كل عشر من تبيع إلى مسنة والجاموس كالبقر (كنز الدقائق صـ 207)

ويجوز دفع القيمة في الزكاة عندنا (الفتاوى التاتارخانية 3/153)
