Breaking a promise

Q: What is the kafara for broken promise made to Allah? Can you please explain how to pay kafara for broken promise made to Allah. And if I make any promise to someone than if I don't fullfil than do I have to pay kafara for that?

A: It is not permissible for one to break an oath. If one breaks his oath he will be sinful and will have to give the kafarah for breaking the oath. The kaffarah for breaking an oath is that one feeds 10 poor people two meals or gives them the amount of sadaqatul fitr (i.e. each poor person should be given the amount of sadaqatul fitr) or clothes them with such clothing with which one is able to perform Salaah in it. If one is unable to fulfill this, then one should fast for three days consecutively with the intention of atoning for the broken oath.

It one make a promise to someone and the promise is of a permissible nature, then one should fulfil the promise. Without a valid excuse, it is not permissible for one to break the promise. However, if one had broken the promise without a valid excuse, then one should make sincere tawba to Allah Tala and ask the person one had made a promise to for forgiveness. Through breaking a promise kafaarah is not compulsory.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
