The condition of the imaam leading the janaazah salaah

Q:
- Is it mustahab, sunnat muakkadah, ghair muakkadah or wajib for the imam who is leading the janaazah salaah to have a beard which is a full fist in length?
- If the imam does not have a fist-length beard, is it permissible for him to perform the salaah?
A:
It is compulsory for the imam to have a fist-length beard.
It is not permissible to appoint such a person to perform the Janaazah Salaah who shaves or trims his beard before it reaches one fist in length.
And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
عن ابن عمر عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال خالفوا المشركين وفروا اللحى وأحفوا الشوارب وكان ابن عمر إذا حج أو اعتمر قبض على لحيته فما فضل أخذه (صحيح البخاري، الرقم: 5892)
ودخلا على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وقد حلقا لحاهما وأعفيا شواربهما فكره النظر إليهما وقال " ويلكما من أمركما بهذا ؟ " قالا أمرنا ربنا - يعنيان كسرى - فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم " ولكن ربي أمرني باعفاء لحيتي وقص شاربي (البداية والنهاية 6/486)
