Explaining to someone what it means to follow a mazhab

Q: A few days ago I was asking my friend what mazhab she follows (like Hanafi, Shaafi, etc.) and she said that she doesn't know what that is. She said that I must explain it to her but I don't know how to explain it.

Could you please tell me how can I explain this to her?

A: For the smooth administration of deen it is virtually impossible that a person in current times will be directed correctly without adopting a mazhab, just as it is like impossible for a person to study medicine without the supervision of an experienced doctor and a university.
