Attending a mixed gathering
Q: Please can you confirm if one will gain sin for attending a mixed gathering? What should one do if forced to attend?
A: It is not permissible for one to attend such a gathering or function where there is free intermingling between non mahram males and females and the laws of shariah are being violated. Through one being present in such a gathering, one will be condoning the wrong taking place and one will be sinful. Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, "The one who adds to the number of the people (involved in sin) will be counted from among them (in the sight of Allah Ta'ala)." Hence, one should refrain from attending such gatherings and explain to his family the serious consequences of being present in such unislamic gatherings.
