Reward for giving ghusl and enshrouding a deceased person
Q: Is there any reward mentioned in the Hadith for the one who gives ghusl to the deceased, enshrouds him in the kafan and buries him?
A: There are great virtues reported in the Hadith for one who carries out such commendable and meritorious deeds. Below is the Hadith reported from Hazrat Jaabir bin Abdillah (radhiyallahu anhu) regarding the great rewards one will acquire for doing such virtuous deeds.
Hazrat Jaabir bin Abdillah (radhiyallahu anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said:
"Whoever digs a grave, Allah Ta'ala will build for him a home in Jannah.
"Whoever gives ghusl to a deceased, he will be cleansed from his sins like the day his mother gave birth to him.
"Whoever enshrouds a deceased, Allah Ta'ala will clothe him with a garment from the garments of Jannah.
"Whoever consoles a person in grief (e.g. the bereaved), Allah Ta'ala will clothe him with the clothing of taqwa and shower His special mercy upon his soul, among other souls.
"Whoever consoles a person afflicted by a calamity, Allah Ta'ala will clothe him with two such garments from the garments of Jannah, which are so valuable that the entire world cannot equal their value.
"Whoever follows a janaazah until its burial is complete, he will receive three qeeraat of reward, of which just one qeeraat is greater than the Mountain of Uhud.
"Whoever supports an orphan or widow, Allah Ta'ala will grant him from His divine shade and admit him into Jannah." (Majmauz Zawaaid #4066)
And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
عن علي، قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: للمسلم على المسلم ست بالمعروف، يسلم عليه إذا لقيه، ويجيبه إذا دعاه، ويشمته إذا عطس، ويعوده إذا مرض، ويتبع جنازته إذا مات، ويحب له ما يحب لنفسه. هذا حديث حسن. (سنن الترمذي، الرقم: 2736)
وعن جابر بن عبد الله رضي الله عنه قال قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم من حفر قبرا بنى الله له بيتا في الجنة ومن غسل ميتا خرج من ذنوبه كيوم ولدته أمه ومن كفن ميتا كساه الله من حلل الجنة ومن عزى حزينا ألبسه الله التقوى وصلى على روحه في الأرواح ومن عزى مصابا كساه الله حلتين من حلل الجنة لا تقوم لهما الدنيا ومن اتبع جنازة حتى يقضى دفنها كتب له ثلاثة قراريط القيراط منها أعظم من جبل أحد ومن كفل يتيما أو أرملة أظله الله في ظله وأدخله الجنة رواه الطبراني في الأوسط وفيه الخليل بن مرة وفيه كلام (مجمع الزوائد، الرقم: 4066)
