Meaning of Barzakh
Q: Please explain what is Barzakh and what happens in one's qabr after being buried.
A: Barzakh translates as partition. This partition is the period after death till Qiyaamat. Hence, it is a barrier from returning back to this world. The dead person remains in the Barzakh till the Day of Judgement. Barzakh compared to this world is like the world compared to the womb of the mother. It is much more spacious, glorious, beautiful and great. It will be like Jannat although not exactly the same.
In this life of Barzakh, every individual is shown his final abode, morning and evening. The Muslim will find it so marvellous and exciting that his heart will jump with joy and he will be very much eager to get to his final abode, while the disbeliever will be lamenting and yearning that Qiyaamat does not come.

عن عبد الله بن عمر رضي الله عنهما: أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: إن أحدكم إذا مات عرض عليه مقعده بالغداة والعشي، إن كان من أهل الجنة فمن أهل الجنة، وإن كان من أهل النار فمن أهل النار، فيقال: هذا مقعدك حتى يبعثك الله يوم القيامة (صحيح البخاري، الرقم: 1379)
حدثنا أنس بن مالك، قال: قال نبي الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: إن العبد، إذا وضع في قبره، وتولى عنه أصحابه، إنه ليسمع قرع نعالهم قال: يأتيه ملكان فيقعدانه فيقولان له: ما كنت تقول في هذا الرجل؟ قال: فأما المؤمن، فيقول: أشهد أنه عبد الله ورسوله قال: فيقال له: انظر إلى مقعدك من النار، قد أبدلك الله به مقعدا من الجنة قال نبي الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: فيراهما جميعا قال قتادة: وذكر لنا أنه يفسح له في قبره سبعون ذراعا، ويملأ عليه خضرا، إلى يوم يبعثون (صحيح مسلم، الرقم: 2870)
