Being called by one's parent while performing Salaah

Q: A person is performing Nafl Salaah and is called specifically to eat, or for any other non-urgent reason, by his parents or grandparents, should the Nafl Salaah be broken?

A: One should not break one's Salaah. However one may shorten one's Salaah.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.

Q: I read the following in Hashiyah tahtawi:

and in durrul mukhtar

Is there ikhtilaaf?

A: The Fuqaha have explained in the case of nafl salaah, if his parents know that he is in salaah then he should not break his salaah, however if they do not know that he is in salaah then some Fuqahaa say that he should complete his salaah and then respond to them while others say that he should break his salaah and respond to them as they may be calling him for something urgent. Since one knows that his parents are calling him to eat he should not break his namaaz for this reason, however he may shorten his salaah.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
