Chatting with non-mahrams on whatsapp
Q: Is it correct for a married woman in Islam to have male friends or a married man to have female friends and correspond with them one on one on whatsapp?
A: In Islam it is impermissible for a non-mahram male and female to be in contact or to have a casual relationship with each other. Apart from this being impermissible, this type of contact generally leads to many wrongs and sins taking place. The Hadith of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) explains that when a non-mahram boy and girl remain in seclusion, then the third one present is shaitaan. Though this Hadith is in regard to a non mahram male and female remaining in seclusion, when they are communicating with each other privately, shaitaan will come in between and entice them both towards sin.

عن ابن عمر قال : خطبنا عمر بالجابية فقال يا أيها الناس إني قمت فيكم كمقام رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم فينا فقال أوصيكم بأصحابي ثم الذين يلونهم ثم الذين يلونهم ثم يفشوا الكذب حتى يحلف الرجل ولا يستحلف ويشهد الشاهد ولا يستشهد ألا لا يخلون رجل بامرأة إلا كان ثالثهما الشيطان عليكم بالجماعة وإياكم والفرقة فإن الشيطان مع الواحد وهو من الاثنين أبعد من أراد بحبوحة الجنة فيلزم الجماعة من سرته حسنته وساءته سيئته فذلك المؤمن. (ترمذي 2/39)
عن أبي أمامة : عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم قال : إياكم والخلوة بالنساء والذي نفسي بيده ما خلا رجل وامرأة إلا خل الشيطان بينهما وليزحم رجل خنزيرا متلطخا بطين أو حمأة خير له من أن يزحم منكبه منكب امرأة لا تحل له (طبراني كبير 8/205 #7846)
