Removing unwanted hair
Q: Please could you advise with regard to certain pertinent masaail relating to removing unwanted pubic and armpit hair.
1. From which point should one remove one's pubic hair? From the navel or from the pubic hairline?
2. Should one remove the scrotal hair?
3. Should one remove the hair between the scrotum and back passage?
4. Should one remove the hair around the back passage?
5. Also, what is the maximum period that a person can go without removing unwanted hair and is it a sin to go beyond this period?
6. Is it compulsory for a woman to shave the armpits and pubic hair regularly?
7. Can women use hair removing creams or lotions instead of scissors, razors or some other sharp things since they are risky in handling?
8. Is it essential in Islam to shave the hair under the arms?
A:
1. Pubic hair should be removed from the pubic hairline.
2. Scrotal hair should also be removed.
3. It is not compulsory to remove the hair between the scrotum and the back passage, however it is permissible.
4. The hair around the anal passage should also be removed.
5. It is preferable to remove unwanted hair (i.e. pubic hair as well as hair under the arm) once a week (preferably on the day of Jumu’ah before the Jumu’ah salaah). To delay till two weeks is permissible. It is makrooh tahreemi for one to delay more than 40 days and thus one will be sinful.
6. Yes, it is compulsory for them to remove their underarm and pubic hair regularly.
7. It is preferable for them to use hair removers, like creams, etc. rather than shaving.
8. It is Sunnah to remove the hair under the arm through plucking it. If this is difficult, then one may shave it.

قال الطحطاوي : والسنة في حلق العانة أن يكون بالموسى لأنه يقوي وأصل السنة يتأدى بكل مزيل لحصول المقصود وهو النظافة وإنما جاء الحديث بلفظ الحلق لأنه الأغلب وسواء في ذلك الرجل والمرأة وقالالنووي الأولى في حقه الحلق وفي حقها النتف والإبط أولى فيه النتف لورود الخبر ولأن الحلق يغلظ الشعر ويزيد الرائحة الكريهة بخلاف النتف ثم العانة هي الشعر الذي فوق الذكر وحواليه وحوالي فرجها ويستحب إزالة شعر الدبر خوفا من أن يعلق به شيء من النجاسة الخارجة فلا يتمكن من إزالته بالاستجمار (حاشية الطحطاوي علي مراقي الفلاح ص 527)
قال الطحطاوي : وفي استحسان القهستاني عن الزاهدي يستحب أن يقلم أظفاره ويقص شاربه ويحلق عانته وينظف بدنه في كل أسبوع مرة ويوم الجمعة أفضل ثم في خمسة عشر يوما والزائد على الأربعين آثم اه (حاشية الطحطاوي علي مراقي الفلاح ص 524)
( وكذا يستحب ) لمريد الإحرام إزالة ظفره وشاربه وعانته وحلق رأسه إن اعتاده وإلا فيسرحه
قال الشامي : قوله ( وكذا يستحب الخ ) أي قبل الغسل كما في القهستاني و اللباب و السراج وفي الزيلعي عقيب الغسل تأمل والإزالة شاملة لقص الأظفار والشارب وحلق العانة أو نتفها أو استعمال النورة وكذا نتف الإبط والعانة الشعر القريب من فرج الرجل والمرأة ومثلها شعر الدبر بل هو أولى بالإزالة لئلا يتعلق به شيء من الخارج عند الاستنجاء بالحجر (رد المحتار 2/ 481)
( و ) يستحب ( حلق عانته وتنظيف بدنه بالاغتسال في كل أسبوع مرة ) والأفضل يوم الجمعة وجاز في كل خمسة عشرة وكره تركه وراء الأربعين
قال الشامي : ( ويستحب حلق عانته ) قال في الهندية ويبتدىء من تحت السرة ولو عالج بالنورة يجوز كذا في الغرائب وفي الأشباه والسنة في عانة المرأة النتف قوله ( وتنظيف بدنه ) بنحو إزالة الشعر من إبطيه ويجوز فيه الحلق والنتف أولى (رد المحتار 6/ 406)
