Bringing home sand and stones from Makkah Mukarramah and Madinah Tayyibah
Q: I have been told that when visiting the holy places, Makkah Mukarramah and Madinah Tayyibah, one should not bring home the sand or rocks as momentos. Please elaborate.
A: If one brings a little sand and a few stones of Makkah Mukarramah and Madinah Tayyibah to one's home land with the intention of tabarruk (deriving blessing e.g. using it as an ingredient of a medication) and one does not commit any type of shirk or bid'ah with it, it will be permissible.
And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
ولا يجوز اتخاذ المساويك من أراك الحرم وسائر شجره ولا يجوز أخذ شيء من طيب الكعبة لا للتبرك ولا لغيره (الفتاوي الهندية 1/264)
تنبيه لا بأس بإخراج التراب والأحجار التي في الحرم وكذا قيل في تراب البيت المعظم إذا كان قدرا يسيرا للتبرك به بحيث لا تكون به عمارة المكان كذا في الظهيرية (رد المحتار 2/626)
