Receiving gifts from a non mahram

Q: I have a female relative who is a doctor. She teaches at some medical college. Recently, she gave me some money as a gift. She has a husband too. I do not know whether the money is from her earning or her husband's earning. What should be done with the money?

A: You should be observing strict purdah with her as she is a ghair mahram to you. It is not correct for you to be casual with her. Similarly, to have close relations with her where she begins to send you gifts in this manner creates suspicions and doubts. Hence, we advise you to return the money to her.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
