Gaining reward for assisting people through one's knowledge

Q: Islamically, is working in pediatrics or geriatrics better (holds more hasanat)?

A: These are worldly sciences and there is no deeni virtue in studying them. Hence, one will not receive any reward for studying them. They are the means for one earning a living and improving one's worldly condition. However, if one benefits the creation through this knowledge (e.g. one treats a poor person for free or one discounts the price to assist someone), then based on the extent of benefit one brings to the creation, one will be rewarded by Allah Ta'ala.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
