Replying with a general message to new year messages
Q: At work, non Muslims will give new year messages. I know that new year celebrations and messages are not allowed in Islam.
Is it permissible to respond with a general statement not connected to the new year such as "I hope you enjoyed your break and all the best for the year".
A: Responding in this way "all the best for the year" resembles the kuffaar custom of wishing each other "new years" (i.e. the best for the new year). Hence you should refrain from this. However, if you wish to respond, then you may write that we are not interested in the new year. What good lies in new years? Rather, we are interested in you that God guides you to the straight path and blesses you with prosperity in this world and the next.
