Adopting measures to keep one's children firm on Deen

Q: What is the ruling for parents towards upbringing of their children.

If children are not on the right track, upto what extent is it permissible to be strict or authoritarian towards child-raising? Kindly explain in detail.

A: The Quraan Shareef commands us to guard ourselves and our families against the fire of Jahannum. This means that the parents should bring up their children in such a way that they will save them from the punishment of Jahannum. And this can only be possible if the parents instill true correct Islamic values in their children. Further, the hadeeth states that each person is a shepherd over his flock i.e. over his family. And he will be questioned on the Day of Qiyaamah regarding them and how he reared them. Hence, just as how all parents adopt measures to ensure that their children are dressed well and eating well, equally or even more important is to adopt measures to ensure that the children are firm on deen.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
