Q: Is it permissible to go for honeymoon?
A: It should be borne in mind that the union of nikaah has been created by Allah Ta’ala to serve as the means of providing the couple with peace, tranquility and inner happiness. In order for this union to serve its purpose, it is imperative for the couple to secure the blessings of the nikaah through adhering to the mubaarak sunnah of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam). Hence, it is essential for the couple to commence this union by carrying out good deeds and constantly remaining in piety and righteousness. If the nikaah is commenced with piety and righteousness, it will be full of blessings and will be the means for pious offspring coming in the world.
Many newly-wed couples book into holiday resorts or travel overseas on holiday trips for their honeymoon with the aim of strengthening the bond of nikaah. However, these places are frequented by the kuffaar and are environments charged with fitnah and sin. Nudity, immorality and all types of vice and sin are prevalent in these environments. Thus, these wrong environments only stimulate people towards sin and motivate them towards haraam. Often, it is witnessed that such honeymoons become the cause for the barakah of the nikaah being totally lost on account of the evil and sinful environment in which the couple is present. When the nikaah is commenced on the wrong footing, then what hope is left for such a nikaah securing blessings in the future?
Going on honeymoon trips is a trend that has been adopted from western culture and is alien to Islam. It is not reported in the Ahaadith that the Sahaabah (radiyallahu anhum) would go on honeymoon trips after nikaah. Rather, they aimed to engender love among themselves through fulfilling the rights of the nikaah and upholding the mubaarak sunnah of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) within their lives.
In essence, the blessings of the nikaah will not be achieved through emulating the trends and traditions of the kuffaar. Rather, the blessings of the nikaah will only be achieved when the couple lead a pure and clean life in total conformity to the mubaarak sunnah of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam).
And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
