Q: Can a 40 day khatam be held outside of the home if there is a problem with space?
A: It is not permissible to hold forty day khatams upon the demise of the deceased. Forty day khatams are not established in deen and are regarded as innovated practices. Hence, holding such practices is not permissible, neither in one's house, nor out of one's house. Such practices should be totally avoided.
The family should recite the Quraan Majeed or give some charity to the poor and convey the reward of the good deeds to the deceased at any time they wish.
