Q: In a joint family system, if a husband forces you to live in a shared room where all the family members, including his father and brother sleep, due to the utilization of a single AC. Is it permissible in Islam or not?
A: This is not correct and is against the Islamic teachings of hayaa, modesty and respect, that the entire family, males and females, all sleep in one room without any measures of purdah being adopted.
When mahrams and non mahrams are all sleeping in the same room without any segregation, then there is fear of fitnah taking place. Generally, a person in his sleep does not know what he is doing. Therefore, sleeping in this manner is totally discouraged.
The Islamic ruling is that the husband should provide his wife with a separate quarter or separate room where she will be able to reside and fulfil her essential needs with ease in privacy.
And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
