Making Salaah qadha while travelling on an aeroplane

Q: A brother travels on an aeroplane for 19 hours from point A to B. He does not perform any salaah on the aeroplane. When he reaches his destination he makes Qadha of the Qasr salaat he missed. Is what he did permissible?

A: After Imaan, salaah is the most important pillar in Islam. The first thing a person will be questioned on the day of Qiyaamah will be in regard to Salaah. Severe grave warnings have been sounded in the Qur'an and Ahaadith for the one who forgoes his Salaah.  It is haraam and forbidden for one to forego one's salaah. Shariah has commanded that salaah be performed in all circumstances.

If one is unable to stand due to illness, then one is commanded to sit and perform the salaah, and if one is unable to sit and perform the salaah, then one should lie down and perform the salaah. However, in such a situation also, one is not excused from performing salaah. The Qur'an clearly explains that even at the time when one faces the enemy in jihaad, one is commanded to perform the salaah. If there is no other way in jihaad to perform the salaah besides standing and performing with signs or besides performing it on one's conveyance, then too one is commanded to perform salaah in that state.

The brother should sincerely repent to Allah Ta'ala for making the salaah qadha during the flight and make a firm resolve that he will never repeat this grave sin in the future.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
