Performing forty salaah in Musjid-e-Nabawi

Q: With regards to the virtue of performing forty salaah in Musjid Nabawi, do the forty salaah have to be performed consecutively, or will we still receive the virtue if we miss a few salaah in Musjid Nabawi in between? Is this virtue restricted to the time of hajj or can it be received at other times as well?

A: The apparent meaning of the Hadith refers to performing the forty salaah consecutively. The Hadith is general. It is not confined to the time of hajj. The hadith is as follows:

عن أنس بن مالك عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أنه قال من صلى في مسجدي أربعين صلاة لا يفوته صلاة كتبت له براءة من النار ونجاة من العذاب وبرئ من النفاق (مسند أحمد 20/40, رقم 12583)

It is reported by Hazrat Anas (Radhiyallahu Anhu) that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, "The one who performs forty salaah in my Musjid, without missing any salaah in between, receives the certificate of freedom from the fire of Jahannum, he gains salvation from punishment and he becomes pure from hypocrisy."

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
