Male wearing shorts in the house

Q: Is it permissible as a male to wear shorts that are above the knees in your home, only with your wife and children?

A: It is not permissible for a male to expose his satr or any part of his satr before people. The satr area is from beneath the navel till the knee (i.e. including the knee). If a male exposes any part of his satr, he will be sinful, and if people view any part of his satr, then they also will be sinful.

Exposing or viewing the satr area of any person is a major sin in Islam. Therefore, it is not permissible for a person to expose his thighs or any portion of his thighs before his children while in the home. By doing so, he will be teaching them wrong values and he will not be setting a good example for his children. The father needs to be responsible and guide his family towards deen.

Note: Though it is permissible for the husband to expose his satr before his wife, however this should be done in the confines of the bedroom at the time when he is intimate with her. At other times, out of the bedroom, he should cover his satr area even before his wife, as this is part of the Islamic teachings and Islamic value system. It is regarded against shame and respect to be clad in this manner and one is deprived of the company of the angels. This culture is a western, kuffaar culture and is totally alien to Islam.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
