Q: Zaid says that in today's time the topi has become a big fitnah. The reason he says this is because one day at the masjid one uncle gave him a topi and told him to wear this topi because its for the Shaikh. Then Zaid says everyone is wearing their own topi and following the Shaikh and they only worry about the Shaikh.
Zaid says if one group of people are wearing a certain topi and another group of people are wearing a different type of topi then they don't even make salaam with each other. Hence Zaid concludes by saying that he knows for sure that Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam at times didn't wear a topi. So from that time in the masjid when the uncle gave Zaid the topi, Zaid says he will not wear a topi till he finds the topi that Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam used to wear.
Zaid also says that he doesn't wear it so people won't know which of the 72 sects he is from. How do we explain to Zaid that he is confused and confusing others?
A: We have seen in and around us that people wear all types of topis and still meet and make salaam and they visit each other without even enquiring about the type of topi they are wearing. This may be just an isolated case. So this is not a fitnah. In fact leaving out the topi is a fitnah because leaving out the topi and not covering the head generally is the style of the kuffaar.
