Q: In the following article on your website: http://alhaadi.org.za/articles/qurbani/668-who-is-required-to-perform-q… is mentioned that "Every adult Muslim, male or female, who owns 613.35 grams of silver or its equivalent in money, personal ornaments, stock-in-trade or any other form of wealth which is surplus to his basic needs, is under an obligation to offer a Qurbani."
Can you please give the reference of Hadith or other authentic books as to how the figure of 613.35 has been deduced?
A: The correct amount should have been 612.36grams.
The nisaab of Zakaat is 200 shar'iee dirhams, which the kitaabs of fiqh like (Shaami - حاشية رد المحتار as well as اليحر الرائق) explain that the weight of 1 dirham is equal to 70 grains of barley.
1 grain of barley is equivalent to 43, 74 mg. 70 x 43, 74 mg = 3.0618 grams. 200 x 3.0618 will give us the nisaab which is = 612.36 grams
