Various masaail of zakaat

Spouses discharging each others Zakaat

Q: Me and my wife both are working and our assets are common e.g. we purchased property/Gold from common funds and we do not remember who paid more or less but we both are eligible to pay zakaat. So my question is in the above situation shall we calculate zakaat together or not. In the past we paid the zakaat together even though we didn't know if it is correct or not. Please guide accordingly.

Giving zakaat in lieu of a service

Q: I am living with my children in my parents house in Pakistan and my husband is away in another country. The maid in my parents house helps me with house hold work. I give her some money every month which is from my zakat. I told her about that and she is happy to accept the zakaat money and help me with house hold work. My mother pays her regular salary on top of that. My question is will that money be accepted as zakaat?

Discharging one's zakaat late

Q: Regarding Zakat Al-maal, what is the ruling on one who pays this late, like a day after his anniversary? Is there any sin on him? Because he was trying to find a suitable charity that he trusts, for the imam he was used to giving his zakat Al-Maal to was somewhat dubious in the end. This caused him to be late in paying his Zakat, while he was trying to find a suitable cause. So what is the ruling on this, and on the one who pays this late out of
laziness? What happens to his reward in both cases?

Not knowing one's zakaat date

Q: A person doesn't know which date his "haul"-date for paying zakat is, and he must thus choose any date of the year. Which date is the ideal to chose? Am I reasoning correctly by choosing the 27th of Ramadhaan, due to the high probability of lailatul-qadr falling on that day, hoping to multiply my reward for giving zakat on this particular day?

Difference between zakaah, fitrah and sadaqah

Q: I am listening to a lecture here at work and just determined or realised that there is a difference between zakaat, fitrah and sadaqah and I realised that I don't think I pay zakat? I feel so ashamed now as I was so ignorant to this and I would like to rectify this immediately. I tried to Google zakaat now but its a bit confusing. So if I may, can Mufti explain to me the difference between the 3 and how do I calculate zakaat and when I must pay it. Your guidance and assistance is greatly appreciated.

Zakaat query

Q: Could the Respected Scholar kindly explain the following Zakaah queries:

  1. Some poor (zakaah liable) individuals are owing us money (R1000). Can we settle their debt (R1000) as a payment for our Zakaah and exclude the amount (R1000) from our total Zakaah?
  2. If the above is permissible, do we have to inform the liable debtors that they can keep the loan amount (1000) as Zakaah, and the debt is settled?
  3. If No.1 is permissible, are there any other conditions, requirements etc.?
  4. If No.1 is not permissible, what should be done and how will it effect our Zakaah?
  5. How and when is Bad Debt Defined for Zakaah?
  6. What's the ruling for Bad Debt?
  7. Is it correct to say and understand; that if we don't Qualify to  pay Zakaah, then we Qualify to receive Zakaah?
  8. Does owning a House (personal not commercial), Car disqualify one from receiving Zakaah, even though one does not qualify to pay Zakaah?
  9. How does an Interest (Allah Ta'ala forgive us and make its repayment as fast as possible) loan effect the Zakaah? And how is it deducted etc.?
  10. What's the Status of the Zakaah given to an individual which one was certain is liable, only to find out he is not? Is the Zakaah fulfilled? Is repayment necessary?
