Q: In the area that I've moved to, the imaam of the local Musjid leads the Salaahs with his trousers below his ankles. Does it diminish from the Musallis reward to follow such an imaam and is it permissible?
Also, after every Salaah, the imaam systematically makes the same short dua after reciting taqdeer once and istigfaar thrice, followed by Ayaatul Kursi, Tasbeeh-e-Fateemi, the fourth kalimaah thrice, and then the same lengthy dua after each Salaah. Is this allowed? And if not, Should I as a Musalli remain in the gathering so as not to create any conflicts with the locals, or rather just leave and perform my Sunnahs?
A:
1. Severe warnings have been sounded in the Ahaadith for the one who wears his trousers/kurta (garment) below his ankles.
Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (Radiallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “On the day of resurrection, Allah Ta’aala will not look (with mercy) at those who wore their garments below their ankles out of pride.” Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said that portion of the garment, which hangs below the ankles, will burn in the fire of Jahannum.
You should in a polite and gentle manner, advise the Imaam that he should wear his clothing according to the Sunnah of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). Those performing salaah behind such an Imaam will not be sinful by performing salaah behind him, instead the sin will be upon the Imaam as well as those who appointed the Imaam.
Though performing salaah with one’s pants hanging below the ankles is impermissible and decreases the reward, the salaah of the Imaam as well as those following him will be valid.
2. The sunnah method of Duaa after fardh salaah is that each person should make a silent Duaa individually. This was the general practice of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) and the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu anhum). After completing your duaa, if you feel it will not create any conflict, you can perform your sunnats.
And Allah Ta'ala knows best.
