Q: I would like to know about the prayer that the bridegroom and bride pray together after nikah and before consuming their marriage. How is it performed and why? I will be getting married soon and have heard about this from an old person and he has not been able to give me more details. All the others to whom I have asked, no one knows about it.
A: When the husband is in seclusion with his wife on the first night, then he should place his hand on her forehead and recite the following dua:
اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّيْ أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ خَيْرِهَا وَخَيْرِ مَا جَبَلْتَهَا عَلَيْهِ وَأَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهَا وَشَرِّ مَا جَبَلْتَهَا عَلَيْهِ
O Allah! I beseech You for the good in her and the good You have created her upon (i.e. the good that is kept in women), and I seek protection from her weaknesses (deficiencies, short-comings, etc.) and the weakness You have created her upon (i.e. the weakness within women).
Thereafter, the husband should perform two rakaats of salaah with his wife, after which they should make dua for the success of their marriage.
