Guidelines for a Muslim Pharmacist when dispensing medication

Q: I am a pharmacist who owns a retail pharmacy and would like to know the shariah ruling on stocking and selling the following types of medication:

1. Tablets and capsules containing porcine and non-certified bovine gelatin.

2. A number of medicines which contain alcohol as a major part of ingredients and many which contain alcohol as a preservative.

3. Medicines which contain ingredients which people can become addicted to e.g. codeine-based products like pain killers, etc.

4. The permissibility of transacting with patients on medical aid.

5. The sale of contraceptive pills and morning after pills to prevent conception.

Gelatine

Q: What is the Shariah ruling on gelatine? It eludes logical comprehension that many halaal certifying bodies rule as halaal gelatine derived from non-halaal animals in their products. In the event that products containing gelatine derived from non-halaal animals are not approved by halaal certifying bodies whose views defer, then manufacturers simply have their products certified by any one of the other halaal certifying bodies who do grant halaal status to products containing gelatine derived from non-halaal animals. And manufacturers laugh all the way to the bank! But what actually is the Shariah ruling? The halaal certifying bodies concerned aver that the gelatine from non-halaal animals undergoes a metamorphosis when processed and becomes halaal just as soap containing processed ingredients from non-halaal animals is deemed halaal.

Taking gelatine for medicinal purposes

Q: I have severe knee pain and joints problem so I need to use gelatine for cure but there is no gelatine which is halaal. There is a gelatine which says kosher. Please guide whether I can consume this as a medicine or not? Then there is agar agar gelatine which comes from sea weeds but it does not help with joint repair. Please help me with this matter. Otherwise I'll have to go for cartilage repair surgery.

Taking weight loss capsules that contain gelatine

Q: I would like to ask about taking medicine which contins gelatine in them. Currently I have to take some weight loss capsules to lose weight. These capsules contain gelatine. It does not say what kind of gelatine it is or from which animal it comes from? This medicine is manufactured in the UK. I would like to know If I can take this medicine knowing that it has gelatine in it? Am I allowed to take this medicine to lose weight?
