Settling one's debts

Q: I have a couple of debts I have to pay back. One is a non-interest loan via a friend. One is a previous student loan where the interest is extremely small. I took this loan out some years back when I didn’t know anything about riba. If I can get a loan (non-interest) from somewhere, is it permissible for me to invest this loan in something halaal in order to make money for myself so that I can pay off my debts first, before I get a job? For example, I am able to get a loan and invest in some business which would eventually provide some return. Assuming I still don’t have a job. Or, if I can get myself a job, although I have these debts, would I be able to save up and invest first before paying the debts off? Or can I save up and invest, while taking some of my savings and putting that towards the debts at the same time? What is the best course to follow and what out of the above us permissible? What way round is allowed?

Witnesses for nikaah

Q: When someone does nikaah at home. What is the procedure with witnesses? How many does the male need and how many the female? I have heard even without witnesses it is counted and it is only sunnat to have witnesses and to do khutbah. If someone has done nikkah without witnesses and khutbah is it counted?

Working for a company that is involved in making arms

Q: I am trying to find out for a friend the permissibility of working for a company that is mainly involved with making/creating arms and selling them to companies globally including countries that use them to kill Muslims. The companies main areas of business are Defence (80%) and remainder Space/Travel. He would be working in the IT division and would have no direct involvement with the defence areas of business. He has asked a few well known scholars who said it would be deemed permissible but wasn't able to get any elaboration/clarification as to how it was exactly permissible. The company is also involved in talks with creating an office in Tel Aviv.

Earning a halaal income

Q: There is a genuine problem and for that I need a genuine advice. My father separated from my mother when I was just 5. Since then my mother had been there to support me. Now this is the time I should support her as this is my sole responsibility. Since I have completed my BBA in finance, I am getting offers from some banks but I am not willing to do job there because I got involved in Islam few months back. Before that I was not in to it in any way. There is no source of income as I just do free lancing and everyone is pressurising me to do job where I have only one option for doing a job i.e. in bank since I have applied at different places but the qualification requirement is MBA which I will be starting in a month or so. My mother, sister and everyone linked to us taunts me for not paying attention to such ongoing circumstances of my family. I am just worried if my mother could get some heart problem for getting tensed on not supporting her. However I have tried to explain her several times that working in a conventional bank is not an appropriate thing to do. But no body is listening to me. Please assist me for what should I do. However I had to do my job for sometime like for an year to gain some work experience so that I can get a better and halal job after gaining some experience. I hope you will assist me for no body is there to provide me a genuine answer. Jazak Allah

Stolen wealth

Q: If someone feeds you something, or gives you clothing that they have stolen. Will you be sinful in using it if you do not know for sure that they stole it?
