Moustache covering the lip

Q: If someone’s moustache is that much big that it covers his upper lip, is it makrooh e tanzeehi or makrooh e tahreemi?

A: Shaving and trimming the moustache are both sunnah and established from the Mubaarak Ahaadith of Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). If one wishes to keep a moustache, then it is permissible, however, he should ensure that it does not overlap his upper lip. If it begins to overlap his upper lip, it will be makrooh tanzeehi and against the teachings of the Hadith.

The Hadith mentions that one should ensure that he trims his moustache before forty days (unless it begins to overlap the upper lip before forty days, then in this case, he should immediately trim it).

The Fuqaha explain that not trimming the moustache for over forty days, (despite it overlapping his lips), is makrooh tahreemi (not permissible) and one will be sinful.

Similarly, the Fuqahaa have ruled that if a person continuously commits a makrooh tanzeehi act, then the action will no longer remain makrooh tanzeehi, but will be regarded to be makrooh tahreemi (impermissible).

Hence, in this case, if the person’s moustache is so long that it covers his entire upper lip (or he makes it a habit to keep his moustache overlapping his upper lip), then it will be makrooh tahreemi (impermissible).

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
