Making qaza of a nafl fast if one made the intention to keep it but didn't wake up for sehri

Q: One makes an intention to keep a nafil fast. However, one fails to get up for sehri and decides not to keep the nafil fast. In this situation, is it then mandatory to make qazaa of the nafil fast that was not kept?

A: If one intended that if he wakes up for sehri then he will keep the nafl fast, but he did not wake up, then it is not compulsory upon him to fast for that day. However, if he wishes to fast, it is permissible for him to do so. However, if one makes the niyyat to fast the following day, regardless of whether one wakes up for sehri or not, then in this case, upon awakening in the morning, one's nafl fast has commenced. If one breaks it, one will have to keep qadha.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
