Q: Please tell me all the virtues of Tahajjud Salaah?
A: Below are a few Ahaadith which mention some virtues of performing tahajjud salaah:
1. Hazrat Aa’ishah (radiyallahu’anha) says: “Do not abandon the Salaah of the night, for certainly Rasulullah (sallallahu ’alayhi wasallam) would never leave out Tahajjud Salah. If he (sallallahu ’alayhi wasallam) was ill or weak, he would perform Tahajjud while sitting.” (Abu Dawood #1307)
2. Hazrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) was asked, “Which salaah is the best after the Faraa'idh, and which fast is the best after the fast of Ramadhaan? Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) replied, “The best salaah after the Faraa’idh is the Tahajjud salaah, and the best fast after the fast of Ramadhaan is the fast of Muharrum.” (Muslim #1163)
3. Hazrat Bilaal (radhiyallahu anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, “Remain punctual on performing tahajjud salaah, for certainly it was the practice of the pious before you, it is a means of gaining proximity to Allah Ta’ala, it prevents one from committing sins, it atones for the sins one had committed, and it repels diseases from the body. (Sunan Tirmizi #3549)
4. Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) once said to Hazrat Mu’aadh bin Jabal (radhiyallahu anhu), “Should I not direct you to the doors of good?” Fasting is a shield and Sadaqah extinguishes sins just as water extinguishes fire, and the salaah of a man in the darkness of the night also extinguishes sin just as water extinguishes fire.” (Tirmizi #2616)
5. Hazrat Amr bin Abasah (radhiyallahu anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, “The closest a servant can get to his Rabb is in the latter portion of the night (the time of Tahajjud), so if you can be from amongst those who remember Allah Ta’ala at this time, then do so. (Tirmizi #3579)
And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
