Imaam performing five rakaat salaah

Q: If the Imaam reads 5 Rakaats Salaah, does the Salaah have to be repeated?

Whilst the Imaam is in the 5th Rakaat he realizes that he read an extra Rakaat, what is the correct procedure the Imaam should do?

A: If the imaam had sat down in qa'dah in the fourth rakaat and thereafter mistakenly performed an extra fifth rakaat, then he should make sajdah sahw at the end of the salaah and the salaah will be valid. However, if he did not make sajdah sahw at the end of the salaah, the salaah will have to be repeated as long as the time of the salaah remains. Once the time elapses, then he will not have to repeat the salaah.

If he did not sit in qa'dah in the fourth rakaat, but stood up for the fifth rakaat, then the correct thing for him to do upon realizing that he stood for the fifth rakaat is that he returns to the qa'dah and completes the salaah with making sajdah sahw at the end. However, if he made sajdah of the fifth rakaat, then his entire salaah will become nafl and he will have to repeat his fardh salaah. If the time passes, he will have to repeat the salaah as qadha.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
