Status of the Mihraab in the Musjid

Q: I would like to know the status of the mihraab in a Masjid?

A: A mihraab is erected only out of convenience. Perhaps the convenience is to determine the centre of the musjid. Originally, it was constructed for other reasons in the time of Islamic rulers, like for security purposes.
