Purchasing a large size animal which is inedible for Qurbaani
Q: Will it be more rewarding to purchase one goat for R3000 for qurbaani (due to its size) but whose meat is hardly edible, or to buy two sheep which have good meat for the same total price?
A: The Fuqahaa have explained that it is more rewarding for one to purchase a Qurbaani animal which has more meat compared to an animal which has less meat in the case where the value of both animals is the same.
However, in the case where the Qurbaani animal is just large in size but its meat is inedible, then since the purpose of Qurbaani is also to eat from the meat (and feed one’s family, the poor, etc.) and this purpose will not be obtained, it will be better and more rewarding for one to purchase two sheep that have good meat with the same money.
And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.

Q: Won't it be better to purchase two sheep for the same price as the big sheep irrespective of whether the big sheep is edible or not?
A: If one is able to purchase two sheep for the value of one large sheep and the meat of the large sheep is edible and more in amount compared to the two sheep, then in this case it will be better and more rewarding to purchase the large sheep for Qurbaani. However if the meat of the two animals are more, then it will be better and more rewarding to purchase the two animals for Qurbaani.

قال الشامي : قوله ( أفضل من سبع البقرة إلخ ) وكذا من تمام البقرة قال في التاترخانية وفي العتابية وكان الأستاذ يقول بأن الشاة العظيمة السمينة تساوي البقرة قيمة ولحما أفضل من البقرة لأن جميع الشاة تقع فرضا بلا خلاف واختلفوا في البقرة قال بعض العلماء يقع سبعها فرضا والباقي تطوع اه قوله ( إذا استويا إلخ ) فإن كان سبع البقرة أكثر لحما فهو أفضل والأصل في هذا إذا استويا في اللحم والقيمة فأطيبهما لحما أفضل وإذا اختلفا فيهما فالفاضل أولى تاترخانية قوله (رد المحتار 6/ 322)
