Fidyah

Giving money to a student to assist him in his studies for the missed fast and salaah of one's father

Q: Dad was ill in hospital and shortly after he got admitted he passed away. He did not give wasiyat for his missed fast and salaah, so I've taken it upon myself to fulfil some sort of kaffarah (fidyah) on his behalf, and insha'allah Allah will accept.

In terms of spending the kaffarah (fidyah), there is a young baligh male who is from a poor family and needs to sort out his final year of studies in order for him to get his degree/diploma in order to move forward with his life.

Is it possible for me to give him the money or a 3rd party who is currently financially responsible for his payments to pay off his final year of studies?

Discharging fidyah for the deceased and settling his debts

Q: My father passed away recently. My parents were divorced since I was 7 years old. We would only meet as a family a few times a year, so now that he is gone, we are left with questions.

1. If he did not fast due to diabetes, how do we pay fidyah for him? We do not even know the number of days/months/years he did not fast throughout his 64 years of life. Is there an average or estimated amount that we should pay?

2. We understand that wealth can only be distributed after paying off the deceased's debts. However, what happens if the deceased does not have any wealth? What if the debt is too large an amount for the children to bear? Is there a guideline to this?

Fidyah for missed fasts

Q: I miss 7 fasts every year in Ramadan due to periods. I did keep some qaza fasts but I don't remember how many. I had the intention to keep all but my health was always weak. Now also, I have excess bleeding and weakness due to which I dont think I can keep fasts. I calculated the missed fasts to be 7×30 years = 210 fasts approximately

1. How much fidya or kaffara do I have to give?

2. Can I give all at once?

3. To whom can I give it? Can I give to Rohingya refugees?
