Tajweed & Qiraat

Tajweed

Q: I am having some confusion about tajweed. Some queries are such that they are best asked in person but having no other choice I have to ask them through email.

1. The makhraj of each Arabic alphabet is different. To what degree do we have to emphasize one each letter while reciting the Quran in Salaah in order to make sure salah is valid?Honestly speaking, I think there will be few people in the Muslim world (including ulama) who can actually pronounce each alphabet in such a way that it can be differentiated. For example, the difference between ص and س, and the subtle difference between ز and ظ etc.

2. The letter ض is very difficult to pronounce correctly. The Arabs pronounce it such that it sounds similar to د. On the other hand, there is actually a difference amongst Indo-pak ulama with regards to ض. Some pronounce it similar to د while others make it sound like ز. In fact , I have read two fatwas of Deobandi Muftiyaan where it is written that the makhraj of ض is closer to ز rather than د. Please clarify this matter.

Questions relating to qiraat

Q: I have a question about Qiraat. I have heard there are ten different Qiraat. Please kindly explain and also is Qiraat reading in a beautiful voice like where your voice goes high and low. Please kindly explain in detail as we would like to study Qirat and not sure which is correct.

Reciting the Qur'an correctly and with the right pronunciation

Q: I kindly request you to answer my few questions clearly:

  1. Is all the types of tarannums like, bayyati, hijazi, sikah, jiharkaah, saba, nahawand, rast etc which exist today is jaiz in the view of deobandi ulamas?
  2. Is this a virtuous deed to study different types of tarannums? If so what intention should we make before starting to learn?
  3. Can we listen to Egyptian qurras who don't have beard? Does their qiraat and tarannum have an authentic chain which reaches to our Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam)?
  4. It is clear that some tarannum needs more breadth and learner should work very hard to achieve the goal. Is this a sunnah to work hard only for the sake of tarannum or it is like putting oneself into trouble which he cannot bear?

Q: These are the tajweed rules I know. Please tell me if they are correct and if there are any more.

Idghaam - Nasal sound

Qalb - Nasal sound

Qalqala - jerk or bounce when stopping at certain letters

Ikhfa Meem Saakin - light nasal sound

Does the 2 Ikhfas have to be light or can it be like the others (Heavy Ghunna)?
