Q:
- Many imaams allowed a clean shaven qari from Egypt to recite in their masjid. Is this acceptable?
- Is this not tantamount to honoring a faasiq?
- Some moulanas who are hanafis say the shafee mazhab does not emphasize the beard. Therefore we can allow a clean shaven qari to read the qiraat.
- One aalim say we must have unity. invite the modernists, barelvis, etc. - unity first.
- Some say we want to listen to the qu'aan, we are honoring the quraan not the qari?
A: The ulama of all the four mazhabs unanimously agree about the importance of the beard. None of the imams disagree on its emphasis and it being impermissible to shave or trim before one fist.
Our fuqahaa have agreed that one who commits a wrong openly is a faajir and he is not supposed to be shown respect, like being greeted etc.
May Allah Ta`ala forbid, but if a qari has to openly consume wine and deals in drugs we will never show him this form of respect. There is no reason why they consider the keeping of the beard as something lesser significant. May Allah Ta`ala protect us all.

Q: Does this mean that, if our masjid is visited by a great Sheikh such as Sheikh Wahba Zuhayli, Sheikh Yusuf Qaradawi or any other great contemporary Sheikh that trims his beard (obviously they think it is permissable), we should not respect him and not greet him?
A: We do not know about them shaving their beards. So it is difficult to comment.
And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
