Q: We are told that Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) wore the loin cloth most of the time and the Sahaba (Radiyallahu Anhum) wore shirts referred to as a kurta, some only the loin cloth due to poverty, while others only wore two pieces of cloth. How does one specify the Sunnah dressing? What was the distinguishing difference between the Sahaba (Radiyallahu Anhum) and the Non-Believers?
A: Both types of clothing were used, the kurta as well as two sheets of clothing. There were few sahaabah that had just one cloth to cover themselves on account of poverty. The general dress was two pieces of cloth or a kurta. There is mention of a trouser in the hadeeth as well. Our ulama explain that wearing the clothing of the pious of one’s area is mustahab.
